Sustainable Brand Spotlight: Outerknown

Hey there, sustainable brand fans! I wanted to start a weekly feature where we stan a brand that is doing the work to help the planet. Today, we’re diving into the world of Outerknown, a brand that’s making waves in sustainable fashion. Co-founded by surfing legend Kelly Slater, Outerknown is not your average clothing brand – its commitment to sustainability and ethical practices is as amazing as a day at the beach. So sorry for all of the surfing puns – I can’t help myself.

What sets Outerknown apart from other brands? For starters, they’re all about transparency. From the sourcing of their materials to the treatment of their workers, Outerknown is serious about being open and honest in their practices. They use eco-friendly materials like organic cotton, recycled polyester, and hemp, and they’re always looking for ways to reduce their environmental impact.

Their catalog consists of clothing you’d expect to see on super cool surfers and beachy type people. For the guys, they have all manner of flannel shirts, various tees, sweaters, beanies, and even board shorts designed by Kelly, himself. The gals have a nice selection of long-sleeved shirts, shorts, tanks, and my personal clothing favorite jumpsuits. I didn’t see any bathing suits for women, so I don’t know if they offer these when the weather heats up or not. Everything seems comfy and cozy with that nice washed-out and worn-in look that so many people love. There’s a lot of organic cotton corduroy and twill with the buttons on Outerknown’s signature Blanket Shirt, being made from, of all things, nuts. The Corozo nut, also called the Tagua nut, to be exact.

But it’s not just about the materials – it’s also about the people. Outerknown works closely with their factories to ensure fair wages and safe working conditions for everyone involved in the production process. They believe that sustainability isn’t just about the planet – it’s also about the people who call it home.

Outerknown is also committed to reducing waste by offering a “Lifetime Warranty” on their products, encouraging customers to repair rather than replace their clothing. This commitment extends to their goal of making excellent-quality, sustainable products that last a lifetime, keeping their garments out of landfills and in circulation for a much longer time. In 2021, Outerknown took a huge stride in furthering that goal by launching Outerworn, a platform that offers customers a chance to buy and sell pre-owned pieces. They also partner with Project Vermont, upcycling used fabric into various other products like dog beds and tote bags. On top of all of that, Outerknown uses recycled materials in their packaging and shipping materials, minimizing their impact on the environment while encouraging a circular future.
